Catfish Fishing Pole Reviews – A Look at Some of the Best

Anglers like to argue and hate to agree about anything. Of course, arguing about what’s the best such and such gives us something to talk about, and everybody’s proud of their own particular choice. Your pole is your most important piece of fishing gear, so it’s something we all get a little passionate about.

Nothing works for everybody, but here is a review of a few of the most popular and high quality fishing rods out there.

Shakespeare Ugly Stik Tiger – Somebody’s Been Here With the Ugly Stik

First off, you might like to know that this is the most popular rod among anglers. People just can’t get enough of the Ugly Stik. This might be because of the quality manufacture of the rod. Ugly Stiks are made with good quality graphite parts, including the core of the rod itself. What this means for the angler is that it can really take a beating. When that giant cat wiggles off your line and swims away to freedom, you can toss that rod into the ground and it won’t break… but we don’t recommend doing that.

For cat fishers, the Ugly Stik is also great because it’s extra sensitive. Those tiny graphite parts make it easier to feel when you get a bite.

What they’re not admired for is their looks. There’s a funny color scheme going on here with orange and red mixed together, but that’s what gives it its distinctive look – and name.

Ugly Stik has stayed on top of the game ever since it was first introduced in the mid-80′s. Everybody has their opinions, people will tell you this or that, but you can’t argue with those sales figures.

Rhino NightVision Rods – Light Up Your Evening

This is an innovative rod made by Zebco that lights up to help you see what you’re catching when you’re night fishing. There is a tiny light at the end of the rod so you can see where you’re dropping your line, and there’s also a bigger light at the butt of the rod so you can see what you’re doing there. These are the most important places to keep a light on when you’re fishing at night.

The lights will last up to 40 hours before you have to change the battery. For some of us, that means about 2 nights of fishing. They take simple AA batteries that go into a little compartment with a waterproof seal. It’s a handy little invention.

Rhino is known for rods that are sensitive and durable as well, so a NightVision rod can be used at any time of day or night.

St. Croix – The Connoisseur’s Fishing Rod

If you’ve been fishing for a while and you’re ready to spend a little money and get a great rod, anything made by St. Croix is great. St. Croix is known for their classy rods that are highly sensitive, light and made durable. They use cork on the handles so that you can feel it when the fish bite. They are also preferred over other rod models because they are strong without being heavy. This is because of their high quality standards.

The only problem with St. Croix rods is that they are pricey. You won’t pick one up for or . You can expect to pay more like 0 or 0. No, I didn’t hit the 0 key too many times. That’s how much they run. St. Croix’s are used by serious sportsmen, and once you use one, you’ll feel the difference and keep wanting your own until you can convince your wife to let you buy it.

Bass Fishing Basics, Best Baits for Bass Fishing

Bass fishing is a really popular sport that can be enjoyed by anyone with the knowledge of a few Bass fishing basics. All species of Bass are some of the most sought after fish, as they are great fun to catch, and offer some of the best sport, both from the shore and from a boat.

One of the first Bass fishing basics to learn will obviously be the bait. This can be live bait such as peeler or soft back crabs, these are really fine baits for Bass. A crab is a peeler when it is in the process of losing its old shell, (to test if a crab is a peeler, try lifting the rear end of its shell; it should come away easily). A crab is a soft back when it has already discarded its old shell but before its new shell has hardened.

Other good Bass fishing baits include sand-eels, lugworm, and rag worm. Sand-eels can be collected from wet sand where they lie buried on a receding tide. They can be used as a dead bait but are more effective as live bait. Both lugworm and rag worm can be dug at low tide and will keep for a couple of days wrapped in damp newspaper. You could also try what is called a bait cocktail, which consists of both crab and worm on the same hook.

Other popular baits are artificial lures, and these should be part of any Bass fishing basics kit. There are so many of these artificial baits available that you could spend a fortune on them. My best advice would be to take a trip to your local tackle store, and ask for the most popular types for your local area. Start off simple with just a handful, which should include a couple of (top water baits) a couple of (spinner baits) and a couple of (plastic or rubber lures). As with the live baits these should all be retrieved slowly when fishing for Bass.

The next of the Bass fishing basics is the cast. If fishing from the shore you should try to cover as big an area as possible. To do this you should cast in a fan shape, start with a cast to the left of where you are standing and retrieve your bait, slowly pausing every ten to fifteen feet. On your next cast aim slightly to the right of the last cast and repeat this process until you have covered a fan shaped area. Try this a couple of times and if you have no luck simply walk twenty or thirty yards down the shore and start again.

Night fishing for Bass can be very productive, some of my best Bass fishing has been at night. For this you will need a lure that makes a lot of noise in the water when being retrieved. There are some excellent lures available for this (again ask at your local tackle store) and the Bass will find them irresistible. These are just a few of the Bass fishing basics, you will pick up more as you go along, but the best advice I can give is to get out there and have a go, I guarantee you will soon be hooked.

Walleye Fishing Boats

Now that you’ve enjoyed a few outings on the lake with some friends, you’ve decided that you want to get a little more serious about fishing and have your eye on walleye fishing boats. At first, your main concern is understandably the cost of the boats available, followed closely by appearance (color, size, and other areas that will impress those looking upon you in envy). However, before you even get that far, considering price and other aesthetic aspects, there are factors that need to be weighed to make sure the boat meets your needs on the lake.

First of all, you’ll want to think about the motors you’ll be using on the boat. Walleye fishing boats should have a large outboard motor with a small trolling motor so that you can troll at a controlled speed without wasting or consuming a lot of gas. For the trolling motor, anything in the 6-25 horsepower range could work for you, depending on the size of the walleye fishing boats that you are considering. Obviously, to get the same results, a larger boat will require a little bit larger motor. For the outboard main motor, you’ll want something over 200 horsepower. This is important to get enough power and speed behind the boat to get you out to your spot quickly in a tournament.

Of course, once you’ve chosen your boat and determined the price, you can then opt for your aesthetic variables. Keep in mind that there are plenty of ways to later fix up a boat and add accessories, giving the boat a facelift, so it is not vital that the boat be the most beautiful one available off the showroom floor. For example, gripper rope cleats will secure your bait buckets, fish stringers, trailer covers, fender cords, and more. Also, you can look for anchor rope in various lengths and winch straps to secure the boat on the trailer. Don’t forget to make sure that your boat trailer is appropriate for whichever one of the walleye fishing boats you purchase. If you buy a used trailer, you’ll save a lot of money but may need to make repairs, such as replacing trailer tires or the support beams.

Depending on what type of boat you actually get, you may have to run the kicker motor along side the big engine. In many cases, walleye fishing boats have an option to add an auxiliary motor steering kit and components. They are easy to install and let you steer the secondary motor from the wheel instead of using the tiller. You can also add an additional motor lift that will assist when the kicker is attached to the transom of the boat to hold it secure without worry that you’ll bend the transom or have the motor break off. All of these options make boating more convenient and less worrisome, especially for new boat owners.

Fly Fishing for Catfish

If you ask any fly fisherman if he gets any catfish, he’ll probably tell you that he sure does… accidentally! Chances are, he’s targeting bass, trout or crappie and a cat gets snagged somewhere along the way. On the other hand, if you ask a catfish man if he ever tries fly fishing, he’ll probably tell you that it’s just too darn difficult to catch catfish with flies.

The truth is, it’s not as tough as everyone makes it out to be. It’s just that nobody does it. And, why not? For one thing, fly fishing works best for fish that are feeding near the surface, and cats are bottom dwellers. For another thing, catfish like to put up a good fight, and many fly fishermen have had fly rods snapped in half by feisty catfish.

Fly fishing is actually a great technique for catching channel cats in rivers. It doesn’t work so well for flatheads or blues. The best way to learn how to fly fish for cats is to get out there and do it, but there are some tips that will help you along the way.

Know Your Stream

You really have to know when and where the catfish are biting in order to catch them with a fly. Catfish are looking their hardest for food usually in the early spring during spawning season, and in the late fall when they’re trying to fatten up for winter. Depending on the river or stream, you may find catfish on the surface all year round. It’s a little like gambling; if you get a few hits, you should keep on going and ride your luck. Most anglers find that if they get a few catfish early in the day, they’ll have a lot of luck all day long. On the other hand, if you spend a while out there casting flies and get nothing, it just might not be the right time or place. If you haven’t caught anything within five minutes, move on to another spot on the river. Once you find a spot where they’re biting, stay until you get a few.

The best places are always around obstructions like dams or log jams, where the catfish will be in calm waters. Look for a spot where there is some activity at the surface of the water. Even if you’re not sure it’s a cat you see, as long as something is biting and you can see it, there are sure to be cats there as well.

Good Gear for Fly fishing Catfish

Fly fishing for catfish won’t probably catch you a giant trophy sized fish. Most anglers catch channel cats that are under 10 pounds fly fishing. You should use a fly rod that is anywhere from 5-7 weight. You don’t want the rod to snap, and you also don’t want it to be so heavy you don’t feel the fish bite.

A long rod helps with control. Once you catch him on the end of your line, you’re going to want to ease him to the shore without losing him. A nice long line will help you to keep his head above water as you pull him to shore.

A word on tying flies – it’s tough at first, but you’ll get used to it! Casting is tricky, too. Just be patient and remember that trial and error is what makes you a pro!

Should You Use Stink Bait Or Live Bait For Catching Big Catfish?

A long-lived debate amongst catfish anglers concerns which bait is most effective for catching big catfish: stink bait or live bait.

The answer is both.

This is why: Catfish possess a sense of smell more powerful than a bloodhound’s and they target wounded prey with shark-like ferocity.

But this is the bottom line: Stink bait catches the most catfish, but live bait catches the biggest.

Favorite live baits include night crawlers, minnows, crawdads, shad, menhaden and freshwater clams. Bluegill can also be used as live bait where it’s legal to do so. Live baits also include chicken livers, shrimp and cut bait–such as shad, anchovies, carp, sardines or mackerel–even those these baits aren’t technically “live.”

The type of live bait used should be dictated by the type of catfish you’re fishing for. Flatheads are attracted to bluegill, whereas big blue or channel catfish prefer minnows, shad or menhaden. Catching big catfish can be as easy as using bait like crawdads and waterdogs.

If you’re using cut bait, it can be aged for a few days to until it becomes sour bait, which adds stink bait attraction. Just place a few chunks in a canning jar and leave an inch of air space below the lid. Add a few drops of water, close the lid fairly loosely, and bury it in the ground in a sunny location for a few days. It’s quite stinky, but it’s a delicacy for catfish. Sour bait is particularly effective in early spring, when catfish are naturally feeding on other fish that have died over the winter.

Anglers typically use single hooks for live bait. But treble hook rigging is also possible.

As for stink baits, they come in a variety of pastes, dips and nuggets. If you’re adventuresome, you can experiment with making your own, or they can be purchased.

Dip baits require a special lure, which is usually a treble hook equipped with a sponge to absorb the stinky bait. Paste baits are typically squeezed from a tube into a soft plastic lure that’s attached to double or treble hooks. And of course, nuggets are threaded directly onto single or treble hooks. Limburger cheese is considered a type of stink bait!

Stink baits can be placed on a leader behind a swivel and a sliding sinker. Alternatively, they can be placed off a three-way swivel or dropper loop above a weight, or simply on the main line with split shot. The variety of rigs, swivels and weights used is basically the same as those used with live bait.

Then, of course, you can enjoy the best of both worlds and double your chances of success by dipping live bait into stink bait! Then you’re likely to catch a load of fish and the big one. Many locales allow using multiple fishing rods or multiple-hook rigs, so you can even use stink bait on one rig and live bait on the other to experiment with which is working better at a particular location.

Beyond stink bait and cut bait, some anglers use dough bait. They may roll white bread into dough balls or include cereal flakes or flour in homemade stink bait recipes. Carp are attracted to dough baits, and catfish sometimes school with carp.

Some anglers have reported catching big catfish on nothing at all–just a shiny hook! Shiny lures and spinners work, too.

Catfish are also attracted by chumming, but this method is not legal everywhere. Chum can be purchased in cans, blocks or bags. Other effective chum includes cheap canned cat (as in feline) food, finely chopped bait, ground-up fish innards or even road kill in a weighted burlap sack.

So whether you use live bait or stink bait depends on whether you want to land that trophy fish or need to feed an army of people! For more great tips on catching big catfish, check out the blog below.

Oklahoma bass fishing is extremely popular and enjoyed by anglers of all ages and skill levels. Gathering together with family or friends to go bass fishing is a great way to spend time with the ones you love and enjoy being with in your spare time. Many exciting stories began with a simple plan for spending the day on the lake or river fishing for bass.
Oklahoma has some of the best fishing spots in the world and the following tips and tactics can help you make your days or nights on the lakes and rivers of Oklahoma a wonderful experience that you will never forget. If you are a serious angler that enjoys spending your free time searching for that “big one” you will be happy to know that there is a very good chance you will find it in the waters of Oklahoma as many trophy bass fish have been caught there in the past.

Bass Fishing Tactics

The tactics you use are very important and will determine whether you have a good day bass fishing or a great day. Catching bass can be quite a challenge as they can put up a big fight and some of the trophy fish have been know to break lines and snap rods quite frequently. Therefore, it is recommended that you carry a variety of lures, lines and even rods with you on every trip so you can be prepared for anything.

Bass Fishing With Live Bait

Live bait is always a good choice when you are fishing for bass regardless of whether you go out on lakes or rivers. However, if you prefer not to use live bait then crankbaits, plastic worms, plugs, spoons and jigs are the best substitutes. Your main concern is to make sure whatever type of bait you decide to use is presented in such a way that it will attract the attention of the bass. If you are having problems catching bass spend some time practicing your presentation. You need to always keep an even but very slow movement to capture their interest and draw them toward your bait.

Bass Fishing With Surface Bait

Using surface bait can usually provide you some great results in the summer months when the bass are abundantly located in the shallow water. There are many different types of surface baits available for you to choose from such as the wobbler, buzzbait, floating minnow, prop bait, stickbait and poppers.

How to Dress for Bass Fishing

Always dress prepared for the weather when fishing in Oklahoma. Even in the spring you can expect the water to be cold and hard to swim in if the need arises. You can also expect cold fronts to move in rather quickly along with rain and cold winds. It is a good idea to carry an extra set of clothing just in case you get caught out in the rain. A warm jacket, gloves and raincoat are good to have on hand as well.

Killer Catfish Bait Recipes – The Smellier The Better

Catfish is one of the oldest species of fish sought after today. The thing about the catfish that gets a lot of attention is the fact that catfish have a very keen sense of smell. What this means for the angler is that they will go after any type of bait that has a smell. In fact, the stronger the smell the more active it will make those catfish. This is why experienced anglers look for bait that grabs the attention of these fish and lures them in.

You can buy catfish bait but avid anglers agree that some of the best bait used for catfish fishing is actually the ones that you make yourself. There are a lot of killer catfish bait recipes available that can help to make each and every one of your fishing trips one that you will be talking about for a long time.

Three Killer Recipes

There are many different catfish recipes available that can be used with great success. There are so many different ones available that it can be a little difficult deciding which ones to start with. To help you get started here are three killer catfish bait recipes that are simple to make and very effective.

One killer catfish recipe calls for mixing one pound of limburger cheese with a little molasses and heating them together in a pot until they are melted. After it melts you need to start adding oatmeal to the mixture until it becomes thick enough to stick together. Place the mixture in a sealed container until needed. When you are ready to go fishing just wrap a small piece around your hook and start reeling in the catfish.

Chum Bait has always been one of the most popular types of catfish bait around and it is rather easy to make. First you need to choose the main ingredient to use. You can choose between shad, shrimp, mullet or anything similar to these. Put your selection into some type of blender and add bay or surf water to it and begin grinding them up together. Once it is all ground up together you need to put it in a freezer bag and keep it frozen until you are ready to use. When you are ready to go catfish fishing all you need to do is place the frozen mixture into the water and it will begin to melt and draw in the catfish.

Chicken liver bait is also an old favorite that is considered to be killer catfish bait. Start by placing a pound of grits into a bucket, add anise extract and chicken livers and mix well. Once the mixture reaches a consistency that holds together it is ready to use.

As you can see the main thing that all killer catfish recipes have in common is that they smell horrible and usually include something bloody or rotten. The worse the bait smells, the better it will draw in the catfish. Keep this in mind when mixing up your own bait to use.

Bass Fishing Secrets Find Some Old School (or New School) Tips and Tactics

Are you new at bass fishing? Are you searching for some great bass fishing secrets to help you get started? You have probably heard experienced anglers talk about the secrets they have learned throughout their years of bass fishing, well now you can know a few of them as well. If you follow the tips and suggestions that are listed below, you will be bass fishing like a pro before you know it.

Start by making sure you choose the right equipment. Your fishing rod and reel is a very important part of how successful your fishing trips will be. Every thing that you use is important right down to the hooks that you put on the end of your fishing line. Make sure that you only use hooks that are sharp and in good condition. When you begin to get a bite you can set the hook by jerking up lightly with a snap of the wrist and then you are ready to reel them in.

Food Source and Bait

Did you know that the mouth of the bass is so large and its stomach is so flexible that it can actually eat prey that is half of its own length? This is an example of the things that could help you become a better bass fisherman. One of the first things that you need to know about bass fishing is what type of food do they eat naturally. Learning about the natural food source of the bass will help you know what baits will work the best for each type of bass that you are going after. When the bass are small they feed off of very small crustaceans and then as they begin to grow they will move up to insects and very small fish. By the time the bass reaches adult size they eat frogs, crayfish, and worms.

The largemouth bass is pretty easy to catch because they will go after just about anything that touches the top of the water but some of the other types of bass may be a little harder to attract. Knowing what the bass eat naturally will help you choose your bait more wisely. Obviously, live bait is an excellent choice for bass fishing so anytime you can use live bait, do so. Just make sure that you keep a cooler with you to keep the bait fresh for the best results.

Of course, live bait is not always an option so it is good to know that you can still receive some great results with artificial bait. One of the best artificial baits to use would be spinnerbaits. They can be used close to the surface of the water or be used to fish out in the deeper water where the bass can be found during the heat of the day. Spinnerbaits can get deep into the areas and around structures where the bass live. They can be used as fast action bait for when the bass are active or slowed down when they are sluggish and slow moving. Another great thing about spinnerbait is that they are user friendly so they are great for both the beginner and the experienced angler.

Picking The Right Walleye Fishing Guides

The best thing about walleye fishing guides is that they know the migration patterns of the walleye and can follow them as the seasons change and progress to the next well known location to reel in the walleye. When you look up walleye fishing guides to find one you’d like to use, you’ll find that the industry is concentrated in the northern part of the North American continent, especially around the Great Lakes. You’ll probably also notice that, of all the lakes in the north, the best place to find walleye, and therefore the top location for walleye fishing guides, is Lake Erie.

One great reason to hire walleye fishing guides is guaranteed catch. You can sit out on Lake Erie all day long and never catch a single bite. However, if you hire a charter, these individuals are out on the lake every day and know the exact spots where the fish were biting just the day before, as well as where they are expected to migrate to next. There is no wasted time carrying around a sonar to locate fish, and there’s no disappointment involved when you follow last year’s list of hotspots and find them dry.

When you choose from among the walleye fishing guides you may be considering, there are some questions to ask. First of all, you will probably want to know what the policy is once the fish are caught. Is it a catch and release program? If not, will the charter company string and clean the fish for you, or will that be your job? What happens if the day really is unsuccessful (as highly as unlikely as that is, based on the experience level of most charter companies)? How many years of experience do they have in walleye fishing specifically or fishing in general? All of this can help you narrow down your choices so that you know your charter is qualified. After all, it would be a waste to go out with someone who didn’t know what they were doing. Asking a few questions can guarantee you a fabulous time out on the lake with a solid catch to take home and brag about.

Anglers adore Lake Erie because they know they’ll find a great catch of walleye here, and most guides are anglers, so these guys want to be where the fish are. After all, that’s how they make money – they take you to where the fish are! There are several locations from which walleye fishing guides leave for every area of Lake Erie, so be sure to check out a complete list so that you know the nearest location by season.
